When a tree should come down

Not every problem tree has to go. But removal is usually the safer choice when you see:

  • A dead or dying tree, with bare branches in summer or bark falling off
  • A new or worsening lean, especially with cracked or heaving soil at the base
  • Large cracks, splits or hollow sections in the trunk
  • Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base or on the trunk, a sign of rot
  • A tree too close to the house, roof, driveway or septic system
  • Storm damage that removed a big part of the canopy

Tall pines and big oaks are common around Fuquay-Varina, and they can do serious damage if they fail. If you're unsure, a free on-site look will tell you whether the tree can be saved with trimming or should come down.

How tree removal works

  1. Assessment. The crew looks at the tree, what's around it and the best way to bring it down.
  2. Felling or sectional removal. Trees with open space can be felled in one piece. Trees near houses, fences or power lines are taken down piece by piece by a climber or with a crane or bucket truck.
  3. Cleanup. Branches are chipped and wood is cut up or hauled off, based on what you want.
  4. Stump. The stump can be ground below ground level so you can replant or lay sod. See stump grinding.

What affects the price

  • The tree's height, trunk size and species
  • How close it is to the house, other structures or power lines
  • Whether equipment can reach it or it must be climbed and lowered by hand
  • Whether the tree is dead or damaged, which can make it riskier to work on
  • Haul-off, log removal and stump grinding

Every tree is different, so the only way to get a real number is an on-site estimate. That's free, and there's no obligation.

Near a power line? Never cut or touch a tree that is in contact with a power line. Call your electric utility first.

Ask about insurance

Tree removal is dangerous work. Before anyone starts, ask the company to show proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage, so you're protected if something goes wrong on your property.

Common Questions

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the size of the tree, where it is and how hard it is to reach. A tree in an open yard costs far less to remove than a large tree leaning over a house. A free on-site estimate gives you a written price.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property?

Rules depend on your town, your HOA and where the tree is, such as in a required buffer. A local tree service can tell you if anything applies before work starts.

Will you haul away the wood?

Usually yes. Most jobs include chipping the branches and hauling the debris. If you'd like to keep the logs for firewood, just say so.

Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?

Insurance often helps when a tree falls on your house or another covered structure. Removing a healthy tree, or one that falls without hitting anything, is usually not covered. Your policy decides.
