Why trim your trees
- Protect your roof. Limbs rubbing the roof wear down shingles and drop debris into gutters.
- Reduce storm risk. Removing dead and weak limbs means less comes down in high wind.
- Clearance. Raise low limbs over the driveway, sidewalk and yard.
- Healthier trees. Good pruning removes diseased and crossing branches and lets light and air through.
- More light. Thin the canopy so grass and gardens get sun.
Common trimming services
- Deadwooding: removing dead, dying and broken limbs
- Crown thinning: selectively removing branches to reduce weight and wind resistance
- Crown raising: removing lower limbs for clearance
- Roof and structure clearance: cutting back limbs that overhang the house
- Shaping small trees and ornamentals
Proper pruning matters
Topping a tree, or cutting large limbs back to stubs, can weaken it and lead to rot and weak regrowth. A good crew makes clean cuts at the right spot on the branch and doesn't remove too much of the living canopy at one time.
When to trim
Many trees are easiest to prune in late winter, when they're dormant and the branches are easy to see. Dead, broken or dangerous limbs should be dealt with any time of year, especially before storm season.
Branches near power lines? Don't try to trim them yourself. Contact your electric utility, which handles lines and the trees around them.
Common Questions
How often should trees be trimmed?
Many mature trees do well with pruning every few years. Trees over the house, fast growers and trees with dead wood may need attention more often.
Is late winter the best time to trim?
For many trees, yes. Dormant-season pruning is easier on the tree and the branches are easier to see. Hazardous limbs should be removed whenever you spot them.
Will trimming hurt my tree?
Proper pruning helps a tree. Over-pruning and topping can hurt it. Ask how much of the canopy will be removed and where the cuts will be made.
Do you clean up after trimming?
Yes. Branches are typically chipped or hauled off, and the yard is raked and blown off before the crew leaves.
